Middle and High School Program
Every week, dedicated college women throughout the United States leave their university campuses and go to middle and high schools in nearby under resourced areas in order to provide girls with the resources and support necessary to make informed decisions that will strengthen their lives and their communities. They use an innovative curriculum to engage the girls in decision-making games, in-depth discussions and community actions around three topic areas: Self Awareness and Self Confidence Building, Sexual Health and Decision-Making, Broader Women's Issues and Future Options. In addition to the weekly sessions, the college mentors are also paired with their mentees in a one-on-one relationship to reinforce session messages and encourage critical thinking about the issues raised during session.
Annually, these mentors and mentees come together in Los Angeles for the WYSE National Leadership Training Conference put on by the National Resource Office which provides guidance, training and support to WYSE programs nationally. Here, the college women develop empathic mentoring techniques while learning how to effectively lead a WYSE branch; and the girls offer ideas for improving sessions while sharing what issues are most relevant to their lives. Together with their mentors, they also determine the focus for the following year's national campaign and offer their vision for the program's future.
WYSE Womyn Network
The WYSE Womyn Network is WYSE's newest initiative to provide our college mentors with a network of resources, support and opportunity as they transition from college, into the workforce. Our Network mentors are diverse, professional women from fields including law, medicine, education, public relations, and the corporate and nonprofit sector. They communicate regularly with their college mentees, and introduce them to their profession as well as related professions. They advance the WYSE mission by exemplifying ways that our college mentors can continue the WYSE mission beyond their academic years in whatever profession they choose.
